New 2012 Duels of the Planeswalker Magic game, unable to text chat?

I recently bought the new magic: the gathering game through steam for my computer. When I look at the controls for the game it says you can hit "Y" to text chat in-game, but when I do this nothing happens. I was wondering how to make this work. thanks
