How to make visible smoke?

i want to make visible smoke in order to see if a filter i made works adequately. matches only provide a quick poof when they go out, and there's too much air movement in the vent hood to use the flame itself to tell me if there is a general flow into the filter or not. any ideas (besides a fog machine, on a DIYer on a budget)? thanks!
